Kratom is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. For centuries, its leaves have been consumed for their uniquely uplifting and elevating effects.
Whether you’re brand new to the world of kratom or simply looking to know more about the different types and formats, this article will explore what kratom is, what its effects are like, what to watch out for, and the various options for consuming kratom – including powder, capsules, gummies, shots, tinctures and more.
Kratom 101
Even though kratom has been used for centuries, it wasn’t until the past 20 years that it became mainstream in the western world. Because of this, most people still come across it for the first time with no real frame of reference or understanding about what to expect and why it’s so special. Traditional use dates back generations, where farmers and laborers have chewed kratom leaves and drank it in the form of tea as a means of staying energized and easing tension while working long hours in scorching tropical climates.
Real kratom isn’t a new compound synthesized in labs. It’s a natural plant with a long track record of use all throughout its region of origin.
Kratom (specifically Mitragyna speciosa) grows naturally across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam. The leaves contain alkaloids, which are responsible for its effects on the mind and body. The leaves are harvested, cured, and ground into a fine powder which is the base form of almost every type of kratom on the market.
Kratom’s Alkaloids
The main alkaloids in kratom include mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, paynantheine, speciogynine, and speciociliatine which are present in different amounts depending on the specific strain and type of kratom. These alkaloids all shape the experience and range of effects kratom has when it’s consumed.
While mitragynine is the most studied alkaloid found in kratom, that alone is not solely responsible for potency or strength. In fact, the real factor that determines how strong kratom is has to do with multiple factors:
- Strain: For instance, a strain like Maeng Da is stronger than Hulu Kapuas.
- Vein Color: Red kratom is more relaxing and calming whereas white vein kratom is more energizing and uplifting.
- Format: Extract-based products have stronger effects. Products like powders and capsules only contain plain leaf, whereas gummies, tinctures and shots are extract-based.
- Amount: Larger doses produce a physically heavier, more sedating experience – whereas smaller doses promote more energy and mental stimulation.
- Leaf Source: Wild-harvested trees tend to produce stronger alkaloids than farmed leaves and are generally higher-potency.
Kratom’s Effects: What Does Kratom Feel Like?
While the effects people get from kratom depend on vein color, strain, format, and dosage – users generally describe the following effects:
- Energy & Focus: Commonly associated with white vein and certain green vein strains, many users take kratom instead of other stimulants, energy drinks, and coffee.
- Balanced Mood Support: Green and Gold/Yellow vein kratom are popular for their ‘hybrid-like’ effects that offer a balanced combination of mild energy & relaxed sense of calm without sedation.
- Rest & Relaxation: Known for nighttime use, red vein strains are the go-to choice for those looking for sedation, easing tension, and a natural source of discomfort relief.
The effects each individual user has can vary based on body composition, tolerance and product quality. It’s always best to start with a moderate dose, wait 30-60 minutes, and adjust from there.
Vein Color
The vein running through the leaf tells you when during the growth cycle the leaves were harvested.
Why does this matter?
Because vein color is the single most important factor when determining which type of kratom is right for you:
White Vein:
Harvested from younger leaves. Associated with energy, focus and stimulation.
- Looking for an energizing daytime option? Choose white vein.
Red Vein:
Harvested from mature leaves. Associated with rest, relaxation, sedation and discomfort relief.
- Looking to ease tension and enjoy soothing relaxation? Choose red vein.
Green Vein:
Harvested from leaves during mid-maturity. More versatile than white and red. A solid all-day option, and generally beginner-friendly.
- Looking for a balanced range of calming effects? Choose green vein.
Gold/Yellow Vein:
Rather than a different harvest stage, Gold/Yellow vein kratom is produced from a unique blending process that combines leaves from different vein types to create a distinct profile. This is what makes it distinct compared to the other three – and often harder to find. Effects are smooth and well-rounded – similar to green but with higher potency.
- Looking for a balanced mix of effects with added strength compared to green? Choose gold/yellow vein.
Strains
Strains are specific types of kratom referring to the origin and growing conditions of the leaves, which also affects its characteristics. Below are the most common kratom strains ordered from mild to strongest (although not limited to all the strains we carry at Mount Kratom):
Hulu Kapuas:
Named after a river in Indonesia, Hulu Kapuas strains are mild, consistent, and a great starting point for new users.
Bali:
Originating from the lush Indonesian island of Bali, these strains provide a sense of calm and mood support suitable for all users. Well-rounded and highly-regarded across all vein types.
Thai:
Uplifting and social. Mild-to-moderate strength, perfect for any time of day or night.
Borneo:
The climate and soil of Borneo produce distinct leaves chosen for full-bodied relaxation and relief.
Maeng Da:
Originally from Thailand, Maeng Da is a powerful strain preferred for high potency and pronounced effects.
Wild:
While wild kratom is in a class of its own, nearly all wild varieties yield higher potency and stronger effects due to stronger alkaloid profiles that are not generally beginner-friendly. Wild kratom strains are perfect for seasoned users who prefer strength.
How is Kratom Used? (Various Formats)
Kratom comes in different formats in order to suit various needs and preferences. For example, some people prefer the precise dosages from mixing kratom powder into tea or juice – whereas others prefer the convenience of capsules, shots and gummies.
Powder:
The most common and cost-effective form of kratom, powders also allow users a unique level of precision over their dose since they can measure and mix the exact amount they want in any given instance (for example, wanting a greater dose at night without having to purchase different types of products for daytime use).
Capsules:
While some people don’t enjoy the earthy taste of kratom, kratom capsules are a taste-free and travel-friendly choice.
Gummies:
Delicious and low-effort for those seeking a seriously potent yet portable option – gummies deliver a pre-measured dose of kratom extract in a familiar and discreet format.
Shots:
Similar to gummies but in a liquid option – shots are concentrated from kratom extract and contain 1-3 powerful servings per bottle. They’re fast to take, easy to carry and travel with, and perfect for those who want high-potency without prep.
Tinctures:
Liquid kratom concentrate dropped under the tongue or mixed into a beverage – tinctures allow precise control over your dosage and absorb rapidly. High-potency extract means only a drop or two is all you need. A practical option for experienced users who want strength, flexibility, and fast onset of effects.
Enhanced Kratom:
Enhanced kratom is simply plain leaf kratom (just like what’s used in powder and capsules) except it’s infused with kratom extract for added potency, making the effects stronger and kick in faster compared to standard kratom – while still maintaining the familiar plain leaf consistency.
What Are Kratom Extracts?
Kratom extract is the most concentrated version where alkaloids are isolated from the plant material, which means intense effects and fast onset. Extracts are used for making gummies, shots, tinctures, and enhanced kratom.
Something to keep in mind when shopping for kratom is that vendors sometimes omit or inflate potency. So if you see claims like “50x” or “100x” but do not have lab reports to back the claim, it’s a big red flag. Third-party lab testing, ideally through an ISO-accredited facility, is the baseline for a trustworthy product.
All Mount Kratom products pass rigorous third-party testing through an ISO-accredited lab that screens for heavy metals and contaminants – all backed by our 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Why Use Extracts?
Extract products are an especially favored option for seasoned kratom users who want strength in a convenient format that they can take on the go and have fast onset of effects.
- Enhanced Kratom Capsules give users added potency with the familiar leaf characteristic.
- Gummies and Shots are easy to carry and offer a delicious way to consume kratom discreetly.
- Tinctures are perfect for precise dosage where only a small drop or two is needed.
Simply put, extracts provide potency and convenience.
If you’re exploring extracts, start slow. We offer extract infused kratom gummies with 15mg (most beginner-friendly), 30mg, and 50mg of mitragynine. For those new to kratom trying shots or tinctures, we suggest taking only half of the recommended dosage listed on the package. You can always take more after 30-60 minutes, but it’s best to start with caution due to the extreme potency of extract-based products.
If you’re just starting out and prefer the convenience of capsules, it’s best to become familiar with the effects of plain leaf capsules before trying enhanced capsules.
Duration of Effects: How Long Does Kratom Last?
Duration of kratom’s effects varies depending on dosage, product format, individual tolerance, and body composition. Most capsules and powders last 4-6 hours, whereas extract-based products tend to have faster onset and shorter yet more intense durations which last anywhere from 2-4 hours.

Tips for People New to Kratom
New to kratom? Below are some practical tips and best practices for starting responsibly:
Start Slow: First-time users should begin with a modest amount and wait at least 30-60 minutes before deciding to take more. Kratom’s onset varies based on metabolism, body weight, and whether you’ve eaten recently. Taking too much too soon is a common beginner mistake!
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid mixing with alcohol or sedatives. Remember, you can always mix powder, shots, and tinctures into a beverage!
Rotate Strains: Using the same strain daily increases tolerance quicker. Rotating between vein colors and strains helps keep your experience more consistent over time.
Match format to experience level: Plain leaf (like powder or capsules) is a great starting point. Extract-based products are for users who have developed a clear baseline understanding of how kratom affects them, so if you’re new to kratom and interested in going with gummies or shots, we recommend taking less than the suggested dose on the package and waiting at least 30 minutes before deciding to take more.
